In the past the Town of Fountain Hills had the opportunity to provide its citizens with free Paper Shredding events, but as a result of our shrinking revenue base, we needed to make reductions and can no longer fund these free events. We do recognize the importance of providing this service so staff is working within the community to partner with businesses and organizations in an attempt to provide the on-site shredding events. Some events may be free to citizens while some events may have a small fee associated with the service.
Why is it important to shred sensitive documents?
Many people still dispose of important documents into the regular trash. This should not be done because there is sensitive information on some of those documents that could fall into the wrong hands and lead to identity theft. According to the U.S. Department of Justice many criminals obtain sensitive information printed or written on documents of citizens that are taken from everyday trash containers.
If you would like more information on how to prevent identity theft, click here to visit the U.S. Department of Justice’s website. There you can take the “Identity Theft Quiz” to see where you can improve your chances of not becoming a victim of identity theft. You can also read more on preventions and what to do in case you do become a victim of identity theft.
