New Classes and Programs Starting in May: Make Your Move!

Looking for something to do as summer begins?  Sign up for a Town of Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation class today.  May has plenty of workshops, special interest programs and sports to ensure we have a program to offer everyone.  Remember, you can sign up for all classes by surfing on over to http://www.fh.az.gov/recreation.  Remember, classes are first-come, first-served so don’t delay.

Special Interest Programs

Yoga
Yoga is a scientific system designed to bring the practitioner health, happiness, and a greater sense of self.  These techniques concentrate on posture, as well as creating a higher consciousness.  Yoga utilizes stretching postures, breathing, and meditation techniques to calm the emotional state of mind and tone the body.  Make sure and wear comfortable clothes and bring your floor mat and water.  Classes will be held at Yoga Village, and you may also rent a mat for $1.  We are offering three separate courses next month!  Each of the three courses costs $40.
• Sunday, 5:30 - 7 p.m.:  May 2-23:  Course 5358; These classes focus on restoration.
• Mondays, 8:45 - 10 a.m.:  May 3-24:  Course 5354
• Thursdays, 5:45 - 7 p.m.:  May 6-27:  Course 5350

Spanish with Byron
Buenos Dias!  This 6-week informal course is geared toward those with little or no background in Spanish. The emphasis is on vocabulary and phrases immediately useful to communicate in Spanish. This course costs $55 and will be held May 24 through June 28, each Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  The course number is 5306.

One-Day Workshops and Seminars

CPR Training
If you want to learn how to save a life in a moment of need and are at least 16 years old, become certified in CPR through the American Safety and Health Institute.  This course is not offered to healthcare professionals.  The course is offered Saturday, May 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at a cost of $30 to residents and $40 to non-residents.  Fountain Hills High School students can get community service hours by obtaining certification.  Cost to students is $20.  You must sign up before noon on the Thursday prior to the class.  The course number is 5365.

Sports Activities

Senior Softball
Looking to have some fun playing softball this summer?  This recreational league plays on Wednesday (ages 65+) mornings at Golden Eagle Park.  The league provides fields and softballs.  Teams are responsible for any make up games. Players not on a team are encouraged to contact Anjelica Giardino at 816-5132 or agiardino@fh.az.gov .  Registration deadline is April 29, 2010, at 6:00 p.m.  Games begin on May 5.  Cost is $200 per team.  The course number is 5327.

Men’s Slow Pitch Softball
Parks and Recreation is looking for a few sluggers for the summer softball season.  Come out for fun, fitness, and good competition.  Softballs and umpires are provided.  The season will end with a single elimination tournament.  The team with the best record will receive a plaque and tournament champions will receive t-shirts.  Players not on a team are encouraged to contact Anjelica Giardino at 480-816-5132 or agiardino@fh.az.gov .  Registration deadline is May 27, 2010, at 6 p.m.  Games begin Tuesday, June 8 at Golden Eagle Park.  Cost is $485 per team.  The course number is 5326.

Men’s Adult Open Basketball
The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to bring back Men’s Adult Open Basketball this spring.  Stay in shape and meet other guys in the community.  Teams are randomly formed each week by shooting free throws.  No official is used, but we do use the honor system.  This course meets at Fountain Hills High School’s gym on Thursdays, May 13 through July 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $48.  The course number is 5347.

Adult Golf 101:  Learn the Basics
This course will concentrate on the fundamentals of the swing, as well as proper grip, posture, alignment, ball positions, and club selection. Clubs and practice balls are available during class time, but please bring your own clubs if you have them.  If you are 14-years or older, then sign up to join us Saturdays, May 22 through June 12, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.  This course costs $90 and is held at the Golf Club at Eagle Mountain and led by its Director of Instruction, Derek Nannen.  The course number is 5329.

Golf 202:  Full Swing Mechanics
This course is designed for those with some golfing experience.  This will help you improve your current swing plant, which is a key ingredient for better accuracy and improved distance.  Clubs and practice balls are available during class time, but please bring your own clubs if you have them.  If you are 14-years or older, then sign up to join us Saturdays, May 22 through June 12, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.  This course costs $90 and is held at the Golf Club at Eagle Mountain and led by its Director of Instruction, Derek Nannen.  The course number is 5331.

Golf Instruction:  Short Game
The Short Game Course will teach you how to make those shots from 100 yards and closer to the hole.  Putting, chipping, pitching, bunkers and overall shot-making techniques from around the green will help you improve your score and is exactly what this course offers.  All skill levels are welcome.  If you are 14 years of age or older, then sign up to join us Saturdays, May 22 through June 12, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.  This course costs $90 and is held at the Golf Club at Eagle Mountain and led by its Director of Instruction, Derek Nannen.  The course number is 5335.
