Google Fiber for Communities

Google Fiber for Communities

In February 2010, Google announced plans to launch an experiment to provide "faster and better" Internet access. Google stated its desire to provide networks that will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than most connections today - over 1gigabit per second, fiber-to-home connections. Google's Google Fiber for Communities program was initiated and a Request for Information (RFI) was issued.

Throughout the process, the town actively engaged the community to gage the level of support of the town's citizens. The economic development division conducted a survey which was posted on the town's website from March 10, 2010 to March 23, 2010. The survey was intended to act as the town's primary gage of the community’s level of supported. Outreach to the citizens about Google Fiber for Communities and the town's survey included:

  • Article in the Fountain Hills Times.
  • Letter to the Editor in the Fountain Hills Times.
  • Press release to local and regional media outlets.
  • Channel 11 (public access) slide.
  • Town of Fountain Hills website.
  • Article in the Town’s newsletter (AveNEWS).
  • Two Tweets to followers.
  • Emails to various community groups.
  • Announcements at several community group meetings.

The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, prompting the town to move forward to The Town of Fountain Hills submitted two RFI's, one as a stand-alone RFI, and one in conjunction with the City of Scottsdale.
